Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing is obstructed and sometimes stopped completely due to a blockage of airway from soft tissue collapse in the rear of the throat. Symptoms can include daytime sleepiness, fatigue, restless sleep, and snoring. Sleep apnea effects over 12 million Americans but some people can go with the condition for years without being aware of it. This is because as breathing is obstructed, your brain is automatically signaled to wake up and once oxygen levels are restored the person falls back asleep without even being aware of it. However, these pauses of breathing can have sever systemic effects and sleep apnea can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
There are many treatments for sleep apnea, but a common and least invasive treatment is the use of an oral appliance at night. Silent Nite and SomnoMed are two common oral appliances used to treat sleep apnea and snoring. These appliances are designed to open up your airways during sleep so that obstruction does not occur and breathing is not hindered. Opening of the airways allows for normal breathing and no snoring so that you and your partner can wake up refreshed from a good night of sleep.
